What is an example of a compound sentence?

My daughter is having so much fun with her assignment on compound sentences, but she wants to make them more exciting! She wrote: "The spaceship took off, and the astronauts waved at the crowd." I love how creative she is, but I want to be sure sheβs using the right structure. Another one she wrote is: "We could go to the beach, or we could stay home and watch a movie."
Does that work? Let me know if she should tweak anythingβthanks a lot!

Your daughter's sentences are excellent examples of compound sentences! π She's using coordinating conjunctions (and, or) correctly, and both independent clauses make sense on their own.
If she wants to make them more exciting, she could experiment with stronger verbs or more vivid descriptions. For example:
β
"The spaceship blasted into the sky, and the astronauts eagerly waved at the cheering crowd."
β
"We could spend the day building sandcastles at the beach, or we could stay home and have a cozy movie marathon."
But structurally, her sentences are already spot on! Let her know she's doing a great job. ππ
