Irregular Verb Example in Sentence

Either the students or the teacher ___ (to be) responsible for keeping the classroom clean." Could you help us figure out the correct verb?

Greetings to you, Chloé Bernard and Lola!
Let me give you a hand with this exercise.
"Either the students or the teacher is responsible for keeping the classroom clean."
'Either...or' can join two singular subjects or one plural and another singular subject.
If it is connecting two singular subjects then use a singular verb.
For example: Either my mom or my sister wants to receive a bag this Christmas. I can't remember who so I'll just ask them again later.
If it joins two plural subjects then use a plural verb.
For example: Either these oranges or these mangoes are sour even though they both look ripe.
If it connects one singular subject and a plural subject, use a verb that agrees with the one nearest to it.
Examples:
> Either Edgar or his siblings know where the car keys are, I don't know who used it last.
> Either my dogs or my sister knows where my other shoe is. I just hope it's not my dogs.
