Intensive Pronouns: Definition and Examples
I tried explaining that the sentence should still make sense without the pronoun, but she’s still unsure when to use himself, herself, or themselves in different contexts.
Do you have any tips that might help her remember the difference?
Hello! This is a great question. I can understand the confusion because the pronouns don't change, but the way they are used changes.
What you said, about the sentence still making sense without the intensive pronoun is true, but there are exceptions to that rule.
Another key difference that is always true, is that with reflexive pronouns the pronoun is an object or indirect object of the verb. The pronoun is reflexive, or reflects back to the verb. Here are two simple examples:
- 'I cut myself' - 'myself' is the object being cut. It reflects back to the verb 'cut'.
- 'I cut her hair myself' - 'her hair' is the object being cut. You can also take 'myself' away, and the sentence will still make sense.
I really hope that this tip makes it a bit easier to tell the difference.
