Help my little boy identify the simple sentences in this short passage:

"Lena loves to paint. She spends hours creating colorful pictures. After she finishes, she cleans her brushes and puts them away. Because she enjoys art so much, she dreams of becoming an artist."

Which ones are simple sentences, and which are not? We'd really appreciate your help! 😊

Hi! Let me break it down for you!

What is a Simple Sentence?

A simple sentence has one subject and one verb (it expresses a complete thought).

Now, let's look at the passage:

 Simple Sentences:

  1. Lena loves to paint. (✔ One subject: Lena, one verb: loves)
  2. She spends hours creating colorful pictures. (✔ One subject: She, one verb: spends)

Not Simple Sentences (These are compound or complex sentences):
3. After she finishes, she cleans her brushes and puts them away. (❌ Not simple because it has After she finishes → extra clause)
4. Because she enjoys art so much, she dreams of becoming an artist. (❌ Not simple because it starts with Because she enjoys art so much → extra clause)

So, the simple sentences are:
Lena loves to paint.
She spends hours creating colorful pictures.

Hope this helps! Let me know if your little boy needs more practice—I’d be happy to help!
