I was helping my kid with identifying modifiers, and we came across these two exercises that we're a bit unsure about.
"The very tall man walked into the room." We're not sure which part is the modifier here. Is it "very tall," or is it something else?
"She quickly ran to the store because she was running late." We’re confused about whether "quickly" modifies the verb "ran" or something else.
Could you explain?

It's important to first understand what a modifier is. A modifier is something that provides extra information about something else in a sentence in order to provide clarity. A modifier can be just one word, or a group of words, and usually modifies nouns and verbs.
In the two examples that you gave, you are correct - 'very tall' modifies the noun 'man', and 'quickly' modifies the verb 'ran'. However, the phrase, 'because she was running late' can also be considered a modifier because it gives more information as to why she quickly ran to the store.
