Here is the difference between semicolons and periods: Periods separate two sentences; semicolons connect them. Semicolons tell your readers that the two sentences on either side speak to each other or are part of the same idea.
Here is an example: 'The pancakes were delicious; they were fluffy and sweet'. You'll notice that the sentences on either side of the semicolon could stand on their own and make complete sense. You'll also notice that both sentences are part of the same idea, which is why it makes sense to use a semicolon.
