What does "hold on" mean?

I know a few! It can mean: telling someone to wait a short while (“Hold on, I'll check in my diary”); to manage to stay alive or to deal with a difficult situation (“We just had to hold on until help arrived”); to hold something or someone firmly with your hands or arms; saying that you are confused or surprised by something that you have just heard or read and want to understand it (“Now hold on, Ed, that wasn't what we agreed at all!”).
