Differences Between 'Fare' and 'Fair' with Examples
Good day all, I was booking a flight online and saw a section for "fare" but then noticed another area about "the fair of the city." It made me wonder if they were somehow related. Could you clarify when to use "fair" versus "fare"?

Hello, and thank you for your great question.

It is important to note that these two words sound the same, but have different meanings. They aren't related in any way.

  • 'fare' - it can refer to money paid for transportation such as a bus fare. It can refer to food or drink (The fare on board the ship was delicious). It can mean to go, get along or succeed (She fared well in her final exam).
  • 'fair' - it can mean that something/someone is just or impartial (The judge was quite fair). It can refer to a gathering for entertainment like you mentioned in your question (The country fair was lovely). It can be used to describe mild weather. It can be used to describe a pleasing complexion (She had fair skin).

I really hope that these examples give you an idea of how to use these words.
