Your instincts were quite correct. The word 'desert' refers to a dry area of land, while 'dessert' is something sweet eaten after a meal.
Did you know that they are also pronounced slightly differently? The word 'desert' is pronounced as you see it - the 'e' is the same as in the word 'bed'. But in the word 'dessert', the 'e' is pronounced as 'uh', the same as in the word 'umbrella'.
And as a side note, there is another meaning to the word 'desert' - it can also be used as a verb to describe abandoning someone: 'He deserted me in the desert'. And when used in this way it is pronounced as 'd-uh-sert'.
