Phrasal verbs in inglese: cosa sono e come funzionano
In inglese si chiama phrasal verb un verbo composto da due o tre parole: l’unione di un verbo e di una preposizione (come on, in, under) o un avverbio (come, down, away). A volte un verbo frasale può avere un significato molto diverso da quello che hanno le parole prese separatamente.
Per esempio, guarda il significato di give up:
give ? dare
up ?su
give ➕up ? smettere
non ❌ dare su
I verbi frasali vengono utilizzati più frequentemente nel parlato quotidiano che nella scrittura o nel parlato formale e ufficiale.
Esempi di phrasal verbs sono hurry up, give up, wake up, calm down… tanto per citare solo alcuni verbi frasali con up and down.

Up in inglese: cos’è e cosa significa
La parola up in inglese può essere tante parti del discorso diverse: preposizione, avverbio, aggettivo, perfino nome. Quello che qui ci interessa, però, è spiegare innanzitutto la funzione, il concetto della parola up.
Up è una positional word, cioè è una parola che aiuta a capire dove si trova un oggetto o una persona rispetto ad altri oggetti o persone, oppure dove si dirige. Altre positional word, oltre ad up e down, sono above, below, far, near, ecc.
⬆️Up significa verso un luogo o una posizione più elevata, oppure in una posizione più elevata.
Un altro significato di up riguarda un aumento di livello, grado, valore, numero, quantità, dimensioni, calore, velocità ecc.

- Jane started jumping up and down with joy (Jane ha cominciato a saltare su e giù dalla gioia; – movimento verso l’alto).

Down in inglese: cos’è e cosa significa
⬇️Anche down è una positional word e significa verso oppure in un luogo o una posizione più bassa. Inoltre, si usa per intendere un livello o un grado inferiore, un numero più piccolo. Down in italiano è spesso tradotto con giù. Talvolta down vuol dire a terra perché distrutto, buttato giù ecc.
Down, frasi di esempio:
- Look down, you can see the sea! (Guarda giù, si vede il mare – verso il basso).
- The prices are finally going down (I prezzi stanno finalmente scendendo – a un livello più basso).
- The bell tower fell down due to the fire (Il campanile è crollato per il fuoco – giù al suolo).

Il verbo to back ha due significati che possiamo riassumere in:
