Before looking at the best anime to watch with kids, let’s look at the meaning of the term. “Anime” is a Japanese word, short for “animēshon,” which in turn comes from the English “animation.” In Japan, “anime” means animated film or cartoon. Outside of Japan, however, the term is used to refer to Japanese animation. There are various anime genres (from action to adventure, from science fiction to fantasy, from drama to comedy). Anime are distinguished from non-Japanese cartoons by their plots, which tend to be more complex and develop over the course of several episodes, and by their themes, which are more mature than those explored in Western cartoons. The art style also differs from non-Japanese cartoons: the large eyes, for example. 

Controlling the online experiences of children and teenagers is not easy for parents (we discuss this in our article on parental control tools ). And even when it comes to anime, it’s best to ensure the content is suitable. Some anime are intended for an adult audience, others are suitable for children 12 and older. Still others are designed for boys and girls. How can you tell if an anime is suitable for your child’s age?

First, we recommend checking the age rating (PEG). Some anime are suitable for children aged 16 and up, while others are suitable for ages 7 and up. Anime are often based on manga (i.e., Japanese comics). Manga are rated differently depending on their intended audience. Knowing the rating of the manga the anime is based on will give you a better idea.

Here is the classification of manga:

• Kodomo: Designed for younger children. These are simple, educational stories with colorful, easy-to-understand drawings, like Doraemon and Pokémon. 
• Shōnen: per ragazzi dai 12 ai 17 anni, trattano temi come avventura, amicizia e crescita personale, con un forte accento su azione e competizione, generalmente hanno protagonisti maschili, come in Naruto e One Piece. 
• Shōjo: per ragazze dai 12 ai 17 anni, si concentrano su amore e relazioni interpersonali, come Sailor Moon. 
• Seinen e josei sono dedicati a un pubblico adulto, rispettivamente di uomini e donne. 

Non possiamo parlare di anime senza parlare di Hayao Miyazaki, che ha creato alcuni degli anime più famosi più belli. 3. My Hero Academia (Shōnen) follows the adventures of Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without superpowers in a world where almost everyone has them. Izuku inherits the power “One For All” and enrolls in the prestigious UA High School to become a hero.
4. Inazuma Eleven (Shōnen) tells the story of a group of middle school soccer-mad kids, led by goalkeeper and captain Mark Evans. The team must face numerous challenges and tournaments to become the best soccer team in the country, using special techniques and extraordinary moves.
5. Yu-Gi-Oh! (Shōnen). Yugi Mutou, a shy and kind boy, solves an ancient Egyptian puzzle that transforms him into a skilled player of the card game Duel Monsters. Yugi and his friends must battle various duelists and unravel the mysteries of the game and ancient Egypt.
6. Dragon Ball (Shōnen). Goku, a young warrior with a monkey tail, sets out on a quest to find the seven Dragon Balls, which can grant any wish. Throughout his adventure, Goku faces powerful enemies, befriends various characters, and discovers his true origins.
7. Slam Dunk (Shōnen). Hanamichi Sakuragi joins the basketball team to impress a girl. Although he initially has no interest in basketball, he discovers a hidden passion and commits to becoming a top-level player.
8. Blue Lock (Shōnen). After Japan’s disastrous defeat at the World Cup, the Japanese Football Federation decides to create a program to find the world’s best striker. The protagonist, Yoichi, participates in this program to become the best player. 
9. Sailor Moon (Shojo). Usagi Tsukino, an ordinary student, discovers she is Sailor Moon, a warrior tasked with protecting the Earth from the forces of evil. Together with the other Sailor Guardians, she fights against various enemies to save the world and find the legendary Silver Crystal.
10. Mermaid Melody (Shōjo). Lucia, a mermaid princess, ventures ashore to find a boy she once saved. She must defend her underwater kingdom from dark threats with the help of her mermaid friends, using the power of song.
