And, of course, pride of place on this list goes to football!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that football has been played in England since the 11th century, and the first written record of it dates back to 1314, it is no surprise that the sport&#8217;s basic vocabulary has British roots. You may already know what these English football terms mean: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goalkeeper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hat-trick<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play-off<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English is the international language of space exploration, business and research. And the same goes for sport! With globalization, football clubs have become highly multinational.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, London&#8217;s Arsenal currently have players from Brazil, Portugal, France, Japan, Norway, Ghana, Egypt and Switzerland in their first-team squad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how does a multinational team communicate on the pitch? Of course, football itself is a means of communication that goes beyond words. But speaking English\u00a0 helps the players and coaches to achieve better understanding and produce even stronger teamwork on the pitch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/section>\n\n\n  <section class=\"section blogHeadingText\" id=\"blogHeadingText-block_9d928feb33b480d98d7d54d77fd97f8e\">\n    <div class=\"blogHeadingText__wrapper\" >\n        <div class=\"blogHeadingText__heading\">\n            <h2 class=\"blogHeadingText__headingItem\" data-blog-heading data-section-id=\"blogHeadingText-block_9d928feb33b480d98d7d54d77fd97f8e\">\n                Say it in &#8216;Football&#8217;            <\/h2>\n        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"blogHeadingText__content\">\n            <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you watching football matches with English commentary? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novakidschool.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novakid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has compiled a special football dictionary to help you understand what you\u2019re hearing:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>12th man<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the fans enthusiastically supporting their favourite team<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anti-football<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: negative play from a team focusing mainly on defence. No one wants to see an anti-football play.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clean sheet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the achievement of not conceding any goals in a match. The record of the match contains no goals against the team in question, so their &#8216;sheet&#8217; is &#8216;clean&#8217;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Goal-line technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: modern technology that registers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whether the whole of the ball crosses the goal line.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hand of God<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: an iconic description of a situation where a footballer scores a goal with their hand, but wants it to be counted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expression has its roots in a legendary incident in a quarter-final of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, when Diego Maradona scored a controversial goal against England. The referee did not see the foul. At a press conference after the match, the footballer was asked if he had scored with his hand. He replied that the goal had been scored &#8216;a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mexican Wave<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the &#8216;wave&#8217; produced by successive sections of fans at a match with people standing up, then raising and lowering their arms, and sitting down again.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Here&#8217;s a surprising fact!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the USA, the word &#8216;football&#8217; refers solely to American football (which has similarities to rugby). But the referee can also use the &#8216;language&#8217; of their cards and whistle.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if a player commits an infringement, the referee just needs to blow their whistle to stop the game. They then\u00a0communicate\u00a0their decision\u00a0using hand signals. For example, the Portuguese Gedson Fernandes, Croatian Ivan Rakiti\u0107 and Bosnian Miralem Pjani\u0107 each speak six languages. And the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belgian<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">footballer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Romelu Lukaku, who was born <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congolese<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speaks no less than eight languages!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latter&#8217;s name has been made into an interesting slang verb, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to lukaku<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means &#8216;to mess up&#8217;. The term was coined as a result of his unsuccessful time at Manchester United.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 I really like my new job, Steve! Don\u2019t lukaku it, bro.
